Nonprofit organizations must raise money in order to pay for programs, staff, technology, and other costs. The main way that organizations receive money is through donations from individuals. Those individuals are solicited by reaching them with their contact information.

Therefore, nonprofit organizations must get the contact information for people that support their mission or they will be incredibly limited in their ability to raise money. The cheapest and fastest way to raise money from a contact list is via email.

Nonprofit organizations will see attrition on their list over time (non-renewals, bouncing emails, unsubscribed, people dying or moving, etc.) so they must constantly grow their lists. There are a lot of benefits to growing your email list, beyond fundraising.

This guide shows you 54 ways to grow your email list throughout the year so that you can raise money, build grassroots power, grow your influence and effectiveness, and have more impact. Here are some sample tips from the list

  1. Create lead magnets: Businesses do this and nonprofits should too. Instead of asking people to sign up for your newsletter, offer visitors to your page(s) something free and of value in order to sign up and then deliver that thing in the follow-up email. This “lead” generating tool can be a checklist, a printable, a cheat sheet, a video, a roundup of tools, a compilation or bundle of articles, etc.

  2. Use a link to your landing page or sign-up form to share everywhere - Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, your electronic signature, etc.

  3. Use QR Codes for anything and everything in person (or even during live online trainings) to drive traffic to your sign-up forms.
