I am grateful for Sean’s insight and desire to share it with others. The board of directors is a fundamental part of any corporation, especially a non-profit, so I was thankful to learn more. As a Founder and CEO it is hard to motivate the board to get on my level. But the resources that Sean provided will help me do that! Check him out! We are a small non-profit. with 5 board members, two volunteer staff, and a budget of $15-20k a year. We don’t have committees because I have done most everything as the ED. Also, we work internationally, so it’s hard for the board to get more involved. But that is changing, and your board agreement will help.

Our board floundered for a few years after our NGO’s creation mainly because neither I, as founding executive director, nor any inaugural board member had real experience or knowledge of board development best practices. Once I took Sean’s course, I was astounded and disappointed I had proceeded all that time in the dark… With the help of a new chair and a secretary, we revamped the meeting agenda, reporting and minutes, and overall operational efficiency. We also upgraded our advisory group, kindly requesting that non-participants resign and bring on people with a new sense of commitment and an updated job description and vision reflected both in our bylaws and our culture. I recommend the course as an inexpensive, self-paced introduction to best practices for board development, especially for smaller non-profits, though he also cites large board practices.
